I was surprised to still find noticeable oak on the nose that displays absolutely no secondary development at all at this point. The oak is not enough to be intrusive but it's hardly invisible either. The big, rich and still moderately structured flavors offer solid concentration and solid if not sensational complexity, all wrapped in excellent length. There is enough fat on the mid-palate that this could be approached now with pleasure though it will certainly continue to improve over time. In short, a lovely effort that is still on the way up. Tasted twice with consistent notes. Try from 2012+. - BH

A difficult vintage, but the domaine was equipped with a sorting table (I know, I helped out on it one afternoon) which was far from being the norm back then. There is some depth of colour but not quite clear, and the nose is on the edgy side. Not so promising, but then the palate offers pure red fruit and some persistence. The 1998 has less depth than the top vintages but is currently in a good place to drink. - JM

The ruby-colored 1998 Grands-Echezeaux reveals plums and wild red berries in its aromatics. Medium to full-bodied, dense, and concentrated, this wine has a chewy, asphalt, licorice, and jammy blackberry-flavored core. While it is firmly structured, it should have the requisite depth of fruit to survive its tannins -- at least in the short to medium term. - WA
